The emergence of bacterial strains resistant to carbapenems, which are among the most effective antimicrobial agents against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, is suggested to be due to plasmid or integron-mediated carbapenemases, efflux systems, reduced porin expression and increased chromosomal cephalosporinase activity [ 40 ].…”
