Surveillance of Nosocomial Sepsis and Pneumonia in Patients with a Bone Marrow or Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplant: A Multicenter Project

Abstract: The ongoing ONKO-KISS project provides unprecedented reference data about the incidence of pneumonia and sepsis among BMT recipients and PBSCT recipients in Germany. These data will be used for further evaluation of the impact of hygiene measures and therapeutic regimens for these patients.

“…We decided to survey nosocomial bloodstream infections in adults (>18 years) in accordance with the ONKO-KISS protocol during neutropenia at our hospital [10]. This protocol was applied as part of the surveillance program of the German Hospital Infection Surveillance System (KISS).…”

“…1,2 This is why the ONKO-KISS study, as part of the surveillance programme of the German National Reference Centre for Surveillance of Nosocomial Infections (KISSGerman Hospital Infection Surveillance System), focuses on these two types of infections during neutropenia, with the aim of decreasing infection rates. 3 Infection is a time-dependant outcome, observation of which may be precluded by prior death or the end of neutropenia. We therefore used statistical methods of survival analysis, for example Klein et al 4,5 We used the Fine-Gray regression model for the cumulative incidences of the competing events 'infection', 'death' and 'end of neutropenia' to analyse risk factors for BSI and pneumonia.…”
