Survey of badger Meles meles damage to agriculture in England and Wales

Abstract: Summary1. In response to reported increases in badger numbers and associated agricultural damage, a questionnaire survey of 3600 land owner/occupiers was conducted in 1997 to determine the extent and signi®cance of badger damage in England and Wales. We assess the signi®cance of badger-induced damage and highlight problem regions, farm types and speci®c crops to allow targeting of future research eorts at amelioration. (This survey investigated alleged badger damage to agriculture but did not address the role … Show more

“…Their position in the top of the food webs and their large potential impact on different human activities (game, agriculture, etc..., Saunders et al 1995;Reynolds. and Tapper 1996;Moore et al 1999) make this group especially significant in conservation and management actions. However, because carnivores are usually scarce, elusive and nocturnal, they are very difficult to count by traditional methods such as transects based on direct observation (e.g.…”

“…However, reliable large-scale population data are sparse today in most parts of Europe (Griffiths and Thomas 1997;Kowalczyk et al 2000;Sleeman et al 2009). Monitoring badgers is important for wildlife management (Eichstädt and Roth 1997;Sleeman et al 2009), agricultural damage (Roper et al 1995;Moore et al 1999;Schley 2000;Delahay et al 2009) and disease control (e.g. bovine tuberculosis in Britain and Ireland, Griffin et al 2005;Woodroffe et al 2008).…”

“…That being said badgers have been shown to be important nest predators in Sweden for game species such as the ring-necked pheasant (Erlinge et al 1984), and may also predate on nests from ground nesting birds of conservation interest (MacDonald and Bolton 2008). Badgers can also cause significant crop and burrowing damage (Moore et al 1999).…”
