Survey of Cherry necrotic rusty mottle virus and Cherry green ring mottle virus incidence in Korea by Duplex RT-PCR

Abstract: The incidence of Cherry necrotic rusty mottle virus (CNRMV) and Cherry green ring mottle virus (CGRMV) have recently been occurred in Korea, posing a problem for sweet cherry cultivation. Since infected trees have symptomless leaves or ring-like spots on the pericarp, it is difficult to identify a viral infection. In this study, the incidence of CNRMV and CGRMV in sweet cherry in Gyeongbuk province was surveyed using a newly developed duplex reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method that … Show more

“…Although the CGRMV infection can lead to leaf necrosis, leaf twisting and curling, and necrosis in fruits of sensitive cherries , in most noted cases it is symptomless. The presence of the virus has been reported either historically or recently from Europe, America, Asia, and New Zealand (Gentit et al 2002;Isogai et al 2004;Wang et al 2009Wang et al , 2013Jelkmann et al 2011;Zhou et al 2011;Fiore & Zamorano 2013;Lee et al 2014;EPPO 2016b). In view of the frequency of CGRMV latent infections and its low economic impact, it is believed that CGRMV occurs worldwide .…”

“…Cherry plants are categorized into two species: sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) and sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.); sweet cherry is more widely cultivated than sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) in Korea. Until now, seven viruses [Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV), Apple mosaic virus (ApMV), Cherry necrotic rusty mottle virus (CNRMV), Cherry virus A (CVA), Cherry green ring mottle virus (CGRMV), Little cherry virus 1 (LChV-1), and Little cherry virus 2 (LChV-2)] from sweet cherry have been reported in Korea (Cho et al, 2013(Cho et al, , 2014(Cho et al, , 2018Lee et al, 2014a). Of these, three viruses (CNRMV, LChV-1, and LChV-2) were designated as quarantine viruses by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (QIA).…”

“…Of these, three viruses (CNRMV, LChV-1, and LChV-2) were designated as quarantine viruses by the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (QIA). A duplex-PCR assay has been previously developed for the detection of CGRMV and CNRMV (Lee et al, 2014b). However, simultaneous diagnostic methods, which include LChV-1 and LChV-2, have not been developed in Korea.…”
