Survey of interdigital phlegmon outbreaks and their risk factors in free stall dairy herds in Finland

Abstract: BackgroundSevere outbreaks of interdigital phlegmon (IP) associated with a high morbidity and major economic losses have occurred in Finland in the past decade. A survey was performed to indicate the current occurrence of infectious hoof diseases and to identify herd level risk factors predisposing to an outbreak of IP.ResultsResponses to a questionnaire revealed that an outbreak of IP defined as morbidity ≥5% within the 1st month of the outbreak, had occurred in 18.0% of the respondent study farms. Risk facto… Show more

“…In addition, Tranter and Morris (1991) identified an increase of pathogen susceptibility for DP under humid husbandry conditions. Kontturi et al (2017) reported less cases of DP in farms with mechanical ventilation, contributing to a reduction of the ammoniac concentration. Regarding the THI class effects (Figure 6D), THI classes 62 and 63 exhibited lower DP incidences than adjacent THI classes above and below.…”

“…Bovine interdigital phlegmon incidence in dairy cows is usually 2–5% per lactation, but some cases of outbreaks were also reported [35,58,92,93]. The role of T. pyogenes in the pathogenesis of this polymicrobial disease is not well defined.…”
