Survey of UV Emissions from Sunbeds in the UK

Abstract: Increased use of indoor tanning for cosmetic purposes has led to concerns for its impact on the risk of cutaneous cancers. The effects on UVR on skin depend on radiant dose, i.e. combination of irradiance and exposure duration. While a number of studies surveyed accessible emission from sunbeds, majority did not include the information on doses received during tanning sessions. Spectral irradiance of 195 sunbeds in five areas of the United Kingdom was measured in order to assess the radiant doses for compariso… Show more

“…In addition, the skin cancer risk for comparable times of exposure was up to six times higher than that for Mediterranean sunlight. This was confirmed by a recent study (Khazova et al, 2015).…”

“…Draudžiama į soliariumus eiti nėščiosioms, tiems, kurių oda labai šviesi ir turintiems didesnį nei 1 cm skersmens apgamą arba daug mažų apgamų. Nepaisant mokslininkų nuomonės, soliariume skleidžiamos ultravioletinės spinduliuotės poveikis žmogaus sveikatai vertinamas prieštaringai, bet vienareikšmiškai visi sutinka, kad teikiamos paslaugos turi būti kokybiškos ir ne jaunesniems asmenims nei 18 metų amžiaus [17,18]. Teikiantys soliariumų paslaugas teigia, kad soliariumuose galima išvengti pavojingo ultravioletinio spinduliuotės poveikio sveikatai valdant UV spindulių dozę, taip pat žinomas spinduliuojamų bangų pastovumas ir ilgiai, naudojami prižiūrimi, specialūs filtrai, kurie apsaugo odą nuo neigiamo UV spindulių poveikio, soliariume gaunama mažiau biologiškai kenksmingų UVB spindulių, skirtingai nei deginantis saulėje [19].…”

“…The results of recent relevant studies conducted in some European countries were similar. Indicatively, 85% of the 195 sunbeds measured in the UK [11], 88% of the 94 sunbeds measured in Italy [12] and 63% of the 52 sunbeds measured in Greece [13] exceeded the 0.3 W m −2 limit. As a matter of fact, values up to three times higher than the limit have been measured in sunbeds in Greece.…”
