Both stiffness and damping parameters of cabin suspension have important influences on the dynamic performance of cabin system for heavy truck. To theoretically study ride comfort of cabin system, the stiffness and damping parameter values of cabin suspension are often required. At present, there is no convenient method unless by bench test to accurately obtain all the stiffness and damping parameters; however, the cost of bench test is relatively high and inconvenient. In this article, according to the real cabin system of a heavy truck, a 3 degree-of-freedom cabin system linear model was presented and its vibration equations were built. By the tested cabin suspension excitations and seat acceleration response, based on curve fitting method, a stiffness and damping parameter identification mathematical model was established. With a practical example of cabin system, the stiffness and damping parameters were identified and validated by bench test. The results show that the built model and the proposed method are workable and lay a good foundation for the theoretical analysis and/or optimal design of cabin suspension to improve ride comfort.

Abstract. BACKGROUND: Heavy mobile equipment operation exposes operators to whole-body vibration (WBV) through the seat. The decision of which seat to retrofit a machine with is usually done statically. OBJECTIVE: To report on the third phase of a three phase project designed to intelligently retrofit seats in heavy mobile machines with the purpose of reducing machine operator WBV exposure. METHODS: Three slag pot haulers were retrofitted with a 6801 Isringhausen seat in which the seat pan cushion was retrofitted with Skydex TM seating material. Vibration dose values (weighted for health), vibration total values (weighted for comfort) and Seat Effective Amplitude Transmissibility were determined from field measurements. RESULTS: WBV was reduced from the first field study to below the upper boundary of the ISO 2631-1 (1997) health guidance caution zone and comfort weighted vibration total values were reduced to the second lowest discomfort rating. CONCLUSIONS: Steel making and other similar industries have been provided with information to more efficiently retrofit existing machines.

The human biomechanical response to whole body vibrations (WBV) is affected by the inertial characteristics of the body itself, among which the anthropometric parameters of the subject, such as body mass and shape, are the most relevant.Although human exposure to mechanical vibration is universally recognized as a significant risk factor for workers, Directive 2002/44/EC indicates the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure to risks arising from physical agents, stating that risk assessment may be essentially based on appropriate information available from the manufacturer without the obligation of carrying out any measurements. For this reason, information such as the machine type and model, operating conditions, driving style, soil type, and workplace characteristics are declared together with the manufacturer's vibration measurements carried out in accordance with specific ISO EN Standards. Clearly, these data do not refer to the specific operating conditions and they do not consider the inertial and geometric parameters of the driver himself (as if these factors could not affect the exposure results). This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the WBV exposure values of loader vehicle drivers and their main anthropometric characteristics, i.e., height and weight. In this case study, the responses of drivers to vibrations from the same vehicle are analysed by means of several sampling campaigns. A correlation study is then presented along with some considerations which are proposed in order to quantify the observed differences and to predict exposure values from anthropometric data.
