Over the years, governments and automakers launched initiatives to improve road traffic efficiency, safety, and people mobility. They have been working on various aspects of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), which aim to improve decision-making, availability of information, and communication technologies to provide applications and services to boost the transportation systems. The development of new applications and services for ITS depends on the availability of different data sources, what it is not the current case. Many studies focus on the communication issues of applications and their associated challenges. To reveal the recent vehicular data use, we examined the most remarkable studies of the last few years, which describe services and applications for ITS, however with a focus on the data employed by them. We introduce the concept of vehicular data space (VDS), which is then used to describe the vehicular scenario from the perspective of data. Moreover, we outline a taxonomy, according to the different data sources. We also categorize the applications, highlighting the data each one used in their approach. Finally, we present some challenges and open issues related to the process for data creation, data preparation, data processing, and data use. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes one of the first holistic surveys on services and applications for ITSs, focusing on the data used by them, as well as their future challenges. Index Terms-Vehicular data space (VDS), vehicular sensor data, connected vehicles, intelligent transportation system (ITS), heterogeneous data, vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET). I. The number of fatalities and injuries on the road has achieved an alarming scenario. Globally, 1.3 million people die every year, and up to 50 million suffer severe injuries. These facts have a direct impact on the economics of nations, leading to costs in the order of about 2% to 5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in many countries [1]. The connection between objects and information exchange has been possible in recent years, with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) in different industries. We can meet different requirements in each industry utilizing this feature. Intelligent transportation uses the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) as a solution for communication among vehicles. It improves traffic management applications and services to guarantee safety on roads. We categorize services, applications, and architectures and propose a taxonomy for IoV. Then, we study open issues and challenges for future works. We highlighted applications and services due to drivers' requirements and nonfunctional requirements, considering the qualitative characteristic. This paper summarizes the current state of the IoV in architectures, services, and applications. It can be a start view to provide the solutions for challenges in traffic management in cities.The present study is beneficial for smart city developments and management.According to this paper's result, the services and applications evaluate performance with 34% frequency, safety and data accuracy, and security with a 13% frequency in selected papers. These measurements are essential due to the IoV characteristics such as real-time operation, accident avoidance in applications, and complicated user data management.

Utility maximization for multi-vehicle multimedia dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks

In vehicular ad hoc networks, maximizing the satisfaction level of multimedia services is a significant issue of concern to users. Relying on the vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, how to schedule the disseminations of multiple vehicles for ensuring high efficiency and guarantee users' quality of service is difficult and challenging, due to the limited channel resource and vehicle sojourn time. In this article, the scheduling problem of multi-vehicle multimedia dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks is investigated. A utility model is developed to map the throughput (i.e. the amount of received data) to the user satisfaction level. The scheduling problem is formulated as a utility maximization problem of all the users, which is NP-hard. Then it is transformed into a finite-state decision problem and we obtained an optimal solution by the searching algorithm, which is impractical and can serve as the upper bound. To solve the problem in practice, an online admission control and scheduling algorithm is devised, which guarantees the inflexible data requirements of those admitted vehicles and maximize the total utility. Finally, we implement and conduct extensive simulations on the basis of real video trace to evaluate the performance. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm has better performance than the state-of-the-art and the conventional algorithms. Thus, it can effectively make scheduling decisions to obtain higher total utility and admission probability.
