Survey on protocols and applications for vehicular sensor networks

Abstract: This article surveys protocols and applications for the driving safety and efficiency in vehicular sensor networks. Nowadays, most vehicles are equipped with Global Positioning System navigation systems in the form of a dedicated navigator or smartphone app. Also, the government regulation requires vehicles to be equipped with dedicated shortrange communication device for the communications among vehicles or between vehicles and infrastructure for a safety purpose. Because of this trend, many applications in v… Show more

“…Moreover, VANETs possess characteristics that are specific to the vehicular environment, such as vehicles are expected to move in well-defined patterns and concentrate in high-density urban regions, and vehicles have a more predictable mobility model. Built on top of VANETs, the Vehicular Sensor Network (VSN) [30], [31] is a powerful sensing platform that provides the capability for collecting, computing and sharing sensor data. A vehicle contains various types of highly reliable sensors and almost eliminates the energy constraints of traditional MANETs, due to its rechargeable battery.…”

“…The Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have been the subject of intense interest in academic and industrial settings in recent years. 1,2 Due to changes in "things," which can connect through a network and progress to obtain information from different things, it is necessary to modify the "things" definition. On IoT, expressions such as the Internet of Everything (IoE) include all things, people, and places that can communicate through a network.…”

“…However, because of the high mobility characteristics, it still has many challenges to provide high-speed and reliable Internet services. In the study of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), 1,2 vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication is a potential technique to solve the high mobility problem. Roadside units (RSUs) deployed beside the road can play the part of Internet access points (APs).…”
