Surveys with the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract: Surveys open up unbiased discovery space and generate legacy datasets of long-lasting value. One of the goals of imaging arrays of Cherenkov telescopes like CTA is to survey areas of the sky for faint very high energy gamma-ray (VHE) sources, especially sources that would not have drawn attention were it not for their VHE emission (e.g. the Galactic "dark accelerators"). More than half the currently known VHE sources are to be found in the Galactic Plane. Using standard techniques, CTA can carry out a survey o… Show more

“…We therefore conclude that we cannot firmly claim a correlation neither with CO traced material nor with dust content enhancement, but all the tests performed present hints of it. The final proof of correlation is left for the future, when the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observations will provide us with more sources (Dubus et al 2013). …”

“…Their current sensitivity prevents an all-sky scan in a reasonable amount of time, and IACT observations must be pointed to targets of interest (see e.g. Dubus et al 2013 for a discussion of the capabilities of next generation instruments). Targeted AGN are selected based on their radio and X-ray spectra (Stecker et al 1996;Perlman 2000;Costamante & Ghisellini 2002) as well as based on their HE flux extrapolated to VHE (Tavecchio et al 2010).…”
