Survival Advantage Mechanism: Inflammation as a Mediator of Positive Self-Perceptions of Aging on Longevity

Abstract: It was found that lower CRP partially mediates the relationship between positive SPA and longer survival. Hence, this study presents a novel pathway to explain the process by which positive SPA extend longevity.

“…Though researchers have spent decades describing ageing phenotypes, it is rare that the longitudinal trends in several prespecified assessments are presented collectively using the same cohort, which may allow us to better understand the reciprocal temporal relationship of change and assess the stability of measurement among community dwelling older adults. For example, CRP has been proposed as an ageing phenotype . Even though we did not observe an obvious overall trend of increasing CRP, we did observe statistically significant increasing CRP using the log‐transformed CRP for the analysis (Table , Fig.…”

“…In four of these domains, all studies showed evidence of ageism. To illustrate, ageism consistently impacted the ultimate endpoint-reduced longevity: all 10 studies found ageism predicted a shorter lifespan in Australia, China, Germany, and the United States [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65]. In one study, using nationally representative data in China, researchers found that older persons with more negative self-perceptions of aging had significantly reduced longevity [62].…”

“…The physiological pathway linking ageism to adverse health has only been examined by two studies so far. In one, a recent population-based study showed that the C-reactive protein, a stress biomarker of inflammation, partially mediated the longitudinal relationship between self-perceptions of aging and longevity [65].…”

“…It appears that SPA predict later health more strongly than health predicts later SPA, creating a self‐fulfilling prophecy that is at least partially explained by physical, behavioral, and psychological pathways . Older adults with negative SPA are more likely to have greater inflammation 4 years later, which mediates survival . They engage in fewer health‐promoting behaviors, adaptive coping strategies during a serious health event, and active and social leisure pursuits .…”
