“…These results indicate that patients displaying favourable, positive beliefs do not always continue SPT program for extended periods. A patient tends to remain compliant in the long-term if he or she is compliant for the first 2 years of recommended maintenance therapy (Ojima et al 2001). Accordingly, it is particularly important that patients comply with the first visit for SPT after APT, which may be ensured by improvement of motivation prior to SPT.…”

“…Finally, a multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model was constructed, which included age and gender as adjusting variables (N 5 161). This step was performed as a result of our previous study (Ojima et al 2001), which revealed that age and gender adjusted by age contributed significantly to compliance. The general form of the Cox proportional hazards model is given by the following equation:…”

“…Literature indicates that patients' compliance with SPT is generally insufficient (Wilson et al 1984;Mendoza et al 1991;Checchi et al 1994;Demetriou et al 1995;Novaes et al 1996;Novaes & Novaes 1999;Ojima et al 2001), with some differences depending on gender or age. However, patient compliance is still a non-well-known matter and data from individual articles cannot be generalized.…”

“…Wilson Jr. (1996) has proposed a number of recommendations to improve compliance with maintenance in periodontal therapy. And a few studies (Matthews 2001, Ojima & Hanioka Shizukuishi 2001, Fardal et al 2002) have shown that it is possible to achieve higher compliance rates (72-87%).…”
