“…However, the collection of in-hospital data and the survival status of individual patients were prospectively registered, and only 52 patients (3% of our entire cohort) were lost to follow-up. Compared with data in other studies, [37][38][39] this number is low. Furthermore, the presence of preadmission disease (comorbid conditions) was determined solely by using the chronic health evaluation component of the original APACHE II.…”

“…In these investigations the cohort was found to be comparable to other general ICU follow-up studies in Scandinavia and in northern Europe. Also the background characteristics (APACHE II, LoS, diagnoses) are similar in comparison [3,27,32]. It may therefore be assumed that the findings presented in this study regarding the effects of social support are valid also for other units in this part of the world.…”

“…A decreased HRQoL has repeatedly been shown for former ICU patients both short and long term after critical care and compared with a general population [3][4][5]. Focus in such studies has been directed at factors believed to be important for this outcome.…”

“…The time taken for the survival of ICU patients to match that of an age-and sex-matched population varies, particularly with diagnosis. European results [33] suggest that paralleling the age-and sexmatched population may occur earlier, but because of the greater severity of illness in ICU patients in the UK, such paralleling may take longer. Results from Glasgow suggest after 5 years the survival of critically ill patients may indeed be better than the age-and sexmatched normal population [34].…”
