Survival based radiographic-grouping for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma may impact clinical T stage

Abstract: Most patients diagnosed with thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have progressed beyond surgical resection as a therapeutic option. Difficulties in the proper assessment of tumor invasion depth before treatment complicate determination of the type and extent of therapy. Therefore, accurate tumor clinical staging is a necessity for identifying treatment options and aiding in patient prognosis. We investigated radiographic factors as prognostic indicators for survival in ESCC. Between July 2006 - … Show more

“… 17 The maximum diameter of esophageal cancer indirectly reflects the degree of tumor invasion, and it can affect T stage and predict the prognosis of patients to a certain extent. 18 In this study, the tumor maximum diameter was the largest slice diameter on CT images. The survival curve showed that the maximum diameter of the tumor divided into <2.5 cm group, 2.5–3.5 cm group and >3.5 cm group, the 1 -, 3 -, and 5-year survival rates were significantly different; However, in multivariate analysis, it was found that the survival prognosis of thoracic ESCC patients was not statistically significant.…”

“…Esophageal carcinoma is comprised of squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma ( 3 ). A high incidence of esophageal squamous carcinoma (ESCC) has been reported in China ( 4 ); in 2015, 429,200 cases of cancer were reported in China, with 281,400 mortalities ( 5 ). Of these cases, 259,000 were ESCC, making it the fifth most prevalent malignant tumor ( 6 ).…”
