Survival of the Cementless Spotorno® Stem in the Second Decade

Abstract: High survival rates have been reported for the uncemented CLS Spotorno stem up to 10 years. To confirm survival at longer followup we report the minimum 15-year (mean, 17 years; range, 15-20 years) for 257 hips using this stem. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical and radiographic results of all 326 patients (354 THAs) operated between 1985 and 1989. The patients had a mean age of 57 years using an uncemented grit-blasted, tapered titanium femoral stem. Eighty-six patients (89 hips) died and eight patient… Show more

“…In the present study, only 5 patients were lost during follow-up period, which represents a reasonable followup rate as compared with similarly studies 23,27) . The COREN hip system was found to have a reoperation rate of 1.6% and a survival rate of 100% at minimum 7 years after surgery.…”

“…The goals of this study were to evaluate (1) survivorship using femoral revision for any reason as the end point; (2) survivorship using femoral revision for aseptic loosening as the end point; and (3) patient-related and surgical risk factors for aseptic stem loosening at a minimum 20-year followup with an uncemented tapered titanium stem in a nondesigner series [2,3].…”

“…THA is a reproducible operation for the treatment of hip arthritis with long-term implant survival [1,7,33]. Although there is still ongoing debate concerning whether cemented or cementless femoral fixation is superior, both methods have documented implant survivorship of 99% due to aseptic stem loosening at 15 or more years of followup [9,22].…”

“…We raised four questions: (1) What is the early migration pattern of this stem? (2) What are the clinical/ radiographic factors predisposing to migration of this stem?…”
