“…Despite the increase in PRM1 gene expression, no differences on native protamination deficiencies were observed in the groups showing higher susceptibility to induced lipid peroxidation. The higher activity of GPx in groups with median, high and highest susceptibility to induced lipid peroxidation agrees with data obtained in previous studies that evaluated the activity of this enzyme in human (Alvarez et al 1987) and ram semen (Marti et al 2003). Marti et al (2007) observed an increase in SOD activity, GRD, GPx and CAT outside the breeding season, indicating a high antioxidant activity when sperm quality is lower, Induced lipid peroxidation effects in ram sperm which might keep the reproductive potential when conditions were less than ideal.…”

“…Measurements were performed based on the rate of substrate consumption in reactions catalyzed by each antioxidant enzyme in a given time interval using a spectrophotometer (Evolution 300 UV-Vis, Thermo Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). Activities of SOD, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GRD) were determined, as described previously (Marti et al 2003). In addition, CAT activity was determined by evaluating the consumption of hydrogen peroxide for 3 min at 242 nm, and the 18.6!10 3 /cm per M molar extinction coefficient was used.…”

“…with EGF 400 ng/mL, but elevated with EGF 50 ng/mL. The antioxidant system in the cell is comprised of reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (CAT and SOD) [34]. Natural antioxidant system and synthetic phenolic antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene have been described as a defense functioning mechanism against lipid peroxidation in semen [35].…”

“…For example, in a recent work (Yániz et al, 2011) we studied the effect of different buffer systems included in the composition of well-defined and synthetic diluents (in vitro), on sperm quality parameters during storage at 15ºC. TRIS caused drastic modifications of certain sperm kinematic parameters during storage at 15ºC although, along with citrate, it is one of the main buffers included in the composition of semi-synthetic ram semen diluents (López et al,1999;López-Sáez et al, 2000;Salamon and Maxwell, 2000;Paulenz et al, 2003;Martí et al, 2003;Yániz et al, 2008). With the available diluents, semen preservation in the non-frozen state is limited to 6-8h without reducing fertility (Maxwell and Salamon (1993); Salamon and Maxwell, 2000).…”
