Survival rate and failure characteristics of the all metal post and core restoration

Abstract: In this retrospective study 516 teeth restored with a cast post and core build-up were followed from 1970 till 1990. The data was derived from the dental records of 283 dental clinic patients treated by senior students. The survival rate was found to be 82% after 10 years for post and cores in the anterior region. The most frequent failure characteristic was recementation (46%), followed by rerestoration (32%). The solitary provisions in posterior teeth showed a relative high survival rate, compared with other… Show more

“…There are 12 clinical studies 16,[143][144][145][146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153] that report the total number of posts and cores evaluated and the total number of complications encountered. There were 279 complications found among the 2784 posts and cores in the 12 studies, producing a mean complications incidence of 10%.…”

“…Morgano SM, Heydeche G, Mentin AG quoted custom-fabricated, cast post and cores are still regarded as the established technique or gold standard for restoring extensively damaged teeth. [10][11][12] The presence of a split for the post system reduces insertion and cementation stresses for this post system. The split may act as a vent for release of hydrostatic pressure during cementation of the post into the canal and minimizes stresses during cementation.…”

“…One such investigation has reported an 82% success rate in 516 anterior teeth restored with metallic posts for an observation period of over 10 years. 5 Another investigation has described a 2.1% failure per annum for 788 teeth restored with metal posts during a fi ve year period, 6 while another long-term study has reported nine failures amongst 138 teeth restored with cast post and cores. 7 The most common modes of failure associated with metal posts include loss of retention, root fracture or post fracture.…”
