Survival Rate of Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma Patients after Surgical Treatment in Thailand

Abstract: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), one of the primary liver cancers, is frequent in the northeastern part of Thailand. Surgical resection remains the best method of treatment, but patients suffering from ICC usually present at a late stage of the disease. Studies of survival and prognostic factors after surgery remain rare. The aim here was to evaluate the survival rate and factors affecting the survival of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma after surgery. The study used a retrospective cohort d… Show more

“…Previous studies of survival in CCA patients have focused on specific subgroups-such as those at advanced stage (Park et al, 2009), receiving surgical resection (Murakami et al, 2011;Pattanathien et al, 2013;Sriputtha et al, 2013) or adjuvant therapy (Knüppel et al, 2012), or specific tumour locations (Cheng et al, 2007;Hasegawa et al, 2007;Nakagohri et al, 2008;Guglielmi et al, 2009;Bunsiripaiboon et al, 2010;Cho et al, 2010;Nuzzo et al, 2010;Li et al, 2011). In addition, most studies were retrospective, only one prospective study (Mihalache et al, 2010) has been reported, and there are none from Asian countries.…”

“…Most CCA patients see a physician in the late stage of disease, because the tumours are clinically silent in early stages, and clinically this results in poor prognosis (Mihalache et al, 2010) A previous study of survival in CCA patients focused on specific groups, such as those receiving surgical excision and had diagnosis in early state (Pattanathien et al, 2013;Sriputtha et al, 2013) but studies of results of supportive treatment have been limited. Most CCA patients see the physician only one time and are lost to follow up.…”

“…PTCD/ PTBS is a method of biliary tree decompression, applied as palliative treatment in patients with inoperable malignant biliary obstruction, which could not only significantly reduce bilirubin level, improve the patients life quality and prolong survival time, but also provide the possibillity for subsequent treatment (Hatzidakis et al, 2001;Iruarrizaga et al, 2011). In clinical, patients with obstructive jaundice caused by hilar cholangiocarcinoma are common, most of them have lost the chance of operation (Butthongkomvong et al, 2013;Chong et al, 2013;Duangsong et al, 2013;Huang et al, 2013;Hussain et al, 2013;Kamsa-ard et al, 2013;Manwong et al, 2013;Prachayakul et al, 2013;Sriraksa et al, 2013;Srikoon et al, 2013;Sriputtha et al, 2013;Subrungruanga et al, 2013;Thunyaharn et al, 2013;Woradet et al, 2013). Obstructive jaundice caused by hilar cholangiocarcinoma not only affects the patient's liver function, but also influence the patient's survival time.…”
