Survival Rates and Clinical Outcomes of Implant Overdentures in Old and Medically Compromised Patients

Abstract: Studies on the survival rate of implant overdentures in medically compromised patients are limited because most studies exclude patients with systemic diseases affecting implant prognosis. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the survival rate and clinical outcomes of dental implants used for overdentures in medically compromised patients. A total of 20 patients (9 men, 11 women; mean age: 67.55 ± 6.84 years, range: 53–81 years) were included. Fourteen patients had more than two systemic diseases, and ni… Show more

“…Other systemic disease-specific clinical studies have provided the same results [38,39]. However, contrary to these authors' assertions, a possible correlation between periimplantitis, which could affect implant success in the medium and long term, and cardiovascular pathologies might exist [40,41].…”

“…For instance, a retrospective follow-up study conducted by Millesi et al found no significant difference in implant survival rates between patients with diabetes (97.3% survival rate) and healthy individuals (98.6% survival rate), as well as between osteoporotic patients (97.3% survival rate) and healthy individuals (97.2% survival rate) [ 9 ]. In another study, dental implants in 20 elderly and medically compromised patients resulted in a comparable survival rate of 96.6% in 60 implants [ 10 ]. Since the demand for implant rehabilitation is increasing and the current results show a high survival rate of dental implants in medically compromised patients, specific precautions should be taken for each patient and careful follow-up care should be applied in these patients.…”

“…Possible prosthetic complications, such as provisional prosthesis fracture, provisional screw loosening (abutment), provisional screw loosening (prosthesis), and/or chipping of the veneering material (final prosthesis), were recorded during the patients' visits [33,34].…”
