Surviving and Thriving: Fundamental Social Motives Provide Purpose in Life

Abstract: Purpose in life (PIL) is often associated with grand achievements and existential beliefs, but recent theory suggests that it might ultimately track gainful pursuit of basic evolved goals. Five studies ( N = 1,993) investigated the relationships between fundamental social motives and PIL. In Study 1, attribution of a life goal pursuit to disease avoidance, affiliation, or kin care motives correlated with higher PIL. Studies 2 and 3 found correlations of self-protection, disease avoidance, affiliation, mate ret… Show more

“…In that validation study using multiple samples, the measure illustrated a single factor structure, showed strong correlations with existing measures of sense of purpose, and predicted multiple outcomes of relevance to the emerging adult period, such as selfimage concerns, depressive symptoms, and perceptions of adult status, illustrating convergent validity. Furthermore, this measure has been used in other studies further supporting its validity (Kashdan, Disabato, et al, 2020;Scott & Cohen, 2020). Participants responded to each item on a 4-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 4 (strongly agree).…”

“…Given that purpose is associated with better cognition 19,20 and lower risk of impairment, 15,16 increases in purpose may help better maintain cognitive function with age. There is also evidence that purpose can be changed through brief experimental manipulations 32 . Such work will be critical for testing the mechanisms through which purpose helps maintain cognition to improve interventions for healthier cognitive aging.…”

“…Thus, in theory, adding a food payoff at the end of an otherwise boring task should reduce boredom in animals, in much the same way a charity donation reduces boredom in humans—by making it more meaningful. Indeed, recent work suggests that many of the primary sources of meaning for humans (e.g., kin care) may be rooted in social motives we share in common with other non‐human social animals (Scott & Cohen, 2019).…”
