Resilience is critical among survivors of trafficking as they are mostly vulnerable populations who face multiple adversities before, during, and after trafficking. However, resilience in survivors of trafficking is understudied. This scoping review aims to clarify the current state of knowledge, focusing on definitions of resilience, how resilience has been studied, and factors associated with resilience among survivors. Five databases were searched using key words related to trafficking and resilience. Studies were included if they were published in English between 2000 and 2019 and focused on resilience with the study design including at least one of these four features: (a) use of standardized measures of resilience, (b) qualitative descriptions of resilience, (c) participants were survivors or professionals serving survivors, and (d) data sources such as case files or program manuals directly pertained to survivors. Eighteen studies were identified. Findings indicated that resilience was primarily described as emergent from interactions between the survivor and the environment. Resilience in trafficking appeared largely similar to resilience in other kinds of victimization. Nonetheless, trafficking survivors also may display resilience in alternative ways such as refusing treatment. Positive interpersonal relationships were the most commonly mentioned resilience factor. In addition, current research lacks studies featuring longitudinal designs, interventions, participatory methods, types of trafficking other than sexual trafficking, and demographic characteristics such as age, gender, and national origin. Future research needs to establish definitions and measures of resilience that are culturally and contextually relevant to survivors and build knowledge necessary for designing and evaluating resilience-enhancing interventions.

B ryant-Davis and Tummala-Narra (2017) noted that intersecting forms of oppression, including racism, sexism, xenophobia, and classism, increase the risk for human trafficking and create barriers to service access in the aftermath of escape. The lived experience of human trafficking is often contextualized by intersectionality, and specifically being a member of multiple marginalized groups, for example, women of color (Oleksy, 2011). Intersectional feminist approaches to theory, practice, and activism aimed at combatting human trafficking also require fighting ethnic hatred, racism, sexism, additional forms of violence against women, educational segregation, poverty, and extreme social exclusion (Schultz, 2012). Crawford (2017) called for an intersectional feminist approach to addressing sex trafficking, which disproportionately affects women; to effectively counter sex trafficking, researchers and practitioners must explore the ways gender intersects with other systems of social dominance, such as caste, tribe, and ethnicity. Intersectional feminist practice, also known as multicultural feminist therapy, centers the experience of the marginalized; resists oppression; celebrates cultural and individual strengths; and pursues the well-being, growth, healing, and thriving of culturally marginalized women (Bryant-Davis & Comas-Díaz, 2016).This chapter provides an overview of human trafficking by exploring the psychosocial realities of traffickers and victims. intention of promoting holistic liberation for all people (Martín-Baró, 1994). While scholarship has grown in the documentation of the individual psychological consequences of human trafficking, less research has analyzed the interlocking webs of oppression that both promote and protect the trade of human beings. Whether addressing human trafficking for labor or for sexual exploitation, disenfranchised persons overwhelmingly face the greatest risk of human trafficking (Bryant-Davis & Tummala-Narra, 2017). The lives and bodies of oppressed peoples in the past and present have been treated as disposable-not simply by individuals but also by institutions, systems, and governments (Rajan & Bryant-Davis, 2021). This chapter first provides a brief overview of liberation psychology and then describes the intersection of oppression and human trafficking in the lives of those marginalized by race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexuality. The authors also provide recommendations for psychologists to engage in professional actions to disrupt systems of oppression that perpetuate human trafficking. The aim of these recommendations is the promotion of holistic liberation, which includes the body, mind, emotions, social networks, political empowerment, and cultural heritage of marginalized persons. LIBERATION PSYCHOLOGYLiberation psychology, founded by Latin American social psychologist and priest Ignacio Martin-Baro, is rooted in the premise that psychological health is political and psychology can either play a central role in maintaining oppression or uplifting liberation (Comas-Díaz & Torres-Rivera, 2020). Martin-Baro argued that this choice is between continuing the status quo of centering people of European descent as the model of humanity and therefore promoting biases or beginning to make it a priority to attend to marginalized communities locally and globally (Barratt, 2011). Working in opposition to Western psychology, which is often decontextualized and ahistorical, liberation psychology works toward healing and empowering marginalized communities, which necessitates a psychological framework that is contextualized, systemic, historical, and sociopolitical (Comas-Díaz & Torres-Rivera, 2020).
