Survivorship, complications and patient-reported outcomes in calcar-guided short-stem THA: prospective mid-term multicenter data of the first 879 hips

Abstract: Introduction Short stems are a bone and soft-tissue preserving alternative to conventional stems. The aim of this multicenter study is to present the mid-term outcomes of a calcar-guided short stem. Materials and methods This is a prospective case series of the first 879 total hip arthroplasties performed on 782 patients across 5 centers using identical calcar-guided short stems. In a mid-term follow-up (6 years), rates and reasons for complications and re… Show more

“…In our own cohort we also observed the highest subsidence within the rst 3 months but unlike as Kutzner et al we detected further subsidence thereafter up to the latest follow-up at 10 years, whereas notably the amount of additional subsidence was very little. In line with other studies the amount of subsidence did not correlate with clinical outcome at latest follow-up 10,[23][24][25] . Again, like other studies reporting on mid-term outcomes of calcar-guided short stems age, bodyweight and BMI did not in uence subsidence.…”

“…Several studies have reported good short-to midterm results for the optimys™ stem (Mathys Ltd., Bettlach, Switzerland) in osteoarthritis with high patient satisfaction 9,10 and a survivorship of 98.4-100% at mid-term follow-up 11,12 . In addition, a 96.2% survivorship was reported for femoral neck fractures 13 and even 100% survivorship for osteonecrosis 14 , all at midterm investigating the same stem.…”

“…In 2022, Kutzner et al [ 18 ] published a study on the mid-term results of the Optimys hip stem for 782 patients at 6 years of follow-up. It showed a survival rate of 98.4%, with 26 revisions in total (including infection and acetabular cup malposition), of which 14 were stem revisions.…”

“…Furthermore, both studies had comparable baseline characteristics of the patients. Kutzner et al [ 18 ] used the Harris Hip Score (HHS) as a functional outcome measure. The HHS is used to evaluate the function of the hip before and after surgery for a range of different disabilities[ 19 ].…”
