Susceptibility of Chinook Salmon Smolts to Bypass Systems at Hydroelectric Dams

Abstract: Several hydroelectric dams in the Snake-Columbia river system are equipped with submersible traveling screens that project into the turbine intakes. The screens are designed to divert juvenile migrant Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. and steelhead Salmo gairdneri from the intake upward into gatewells and the ajoining central bypass system. Assays of gill Na+,K*-ATPase were performed on yearling chinook salmon O. tshawytscha collected during several routine fish guidance efficiency tests in 1985 and 1986. On th… Show more

“…Physiological quality of juvenile salmonids varies widely among hatcheries, out-migration dates, and years (Dickhoff et al 1995;Beckman et al 2000). Seasonal changes in smoltification patterns, stress, disease, and energy usage (Giorgi et al 1988;Beckman et al 2000;Congleton et al 2000Congleton et al , 2005Schreck et al 2006) may contribute to this variation and affect migration behavior (Giorgi et al 1988;Clugston and Schreck 1992) and predator avoidance (Olla et al 1992(Olla et al , 1995Mesa et al 1994).…”
