Susceptibility of European and Africanized honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) to Varroa jacobsoni Oud. in Mexico

Abstract: -The knowledge generated from several studies conducted in Mexico on the susceptibility of European and Africanized honey bees to Varroa jacobsoni is reviewed and compared with the situation in Brazil. There is evidence of genotypic variation for mite population growth, and for tolerance to the mite in honey bee colonies located in Mexico. However, Mexican honey bees seem to be relatively less tolerant to the parasite than bees in Brazil. The main difference is that mite fertility rates in Mexico are higher th… Show more

“…The degree of mite tolerance in Mexico seems to be lower compared to that of AHBs in Brazil (Guzmán-Novoa et al, 1999), but the system is also stable . However, the fertility of mites has been found to be slightly higher than in Brazil (88% Medina and Martin, 1999;83-96% Medina et al, 2002;82-97% Vandame et al, 1999).…”

“…Observations in the original host, Apis cerana, suggest that its tolerance to Varroa is in part due to mechanisms of behavioral defense like grooming and removal of infested brood (Rosenkranz et al, 1993;Boecking and Spivak, 1999;Rath, 1999). Similar reactions have also been assumed for Africanized honey bees, reactions which have been considered less well expressed in non-Varroa-tolerant European honey bees (Guzman-Novoa et al, 1999;Guerra et al, 2000).…”

“…Comparative data on hygienic behavior in honey bees of different strain or origin are rare (Boecking and Ritter, 1993;Moretto et al, 1993;Guzman-Novoa et al, 1999;Guerra et al, 2000). Our study represents one of the first long-term surveys of tolerant and susceptible colonies which were kept side by side.…”
