Susceptibility of sour cherry cultivars to isolates of Monilia laxa (Ehrenbergh) Saccardo et Voglino

Abstract: In this study, the susceptibility of 7 commercially important sour cherry cultivars to Monilinia laxa was studied. Artificial inoculation was made with M. laxa isolates, which were isolated from different woody plants. Artificial inoculation was prepared in the laboratory and in the field. In laboratory, flowers of sour cherries while in the field, the two-year old twigs were inoculated in 2006 and 2007. According to results of stigmata inoculation, there were infection ability differences among the isolates o… Show more

“…The in vivo inoculations were based on the method elaborated by Rozsnyay (1977) for in vitro inoculation of apricot with cytospora canker (Cytospora cincta Sacc. ), which is also appropriate for inoculation by M. laxa (Crossa-Raynaud 1969;Sződi et al 2008). The method involves determining the phloem necrosis of infected twigs.…”

“…The most important spoilage fungi of sweet cherries are Botrytis cinerea, Penicillium expansum, and Monilinia spp. [10][11][12][13] Consequently, the SL of early cherry is limited to 7-10 days. 6,8 Therefore, strict storage conditions must be applied, alone or in combination with different postharvest strategies, to delay spoilage and maintain quality.…”

“…Among them, primarily diverse species of filamentous fungi cause relatively faster spoilage after harvesting. The most important spoilage fungi of sweet cherries are Botrytis cinerea , Penicillium expansum , and Monilinia spp 10‐13 . Consequently, the SL of early cherry is limited to 7–10 days 6,8 .…”
