Sustainability and Circular Economy of Food Wastes: Waste Reduction Strategies, Higher Recycling Methods, and Improved Valorization

Abstract: In this review, the issue of food recycling was comprehensively studied from the perspective of recent research. Firstly, the concept of circular economy and its application in reducing waste production and the strategies for waste reduction (waste prevention) were discussed. The concept suggests that we can produce less waste from the beginning to reduce costs for recycling, instead of generating much waste for recycling through specific approaches. Secondly, the results of several investigations on the recyc… Show more

“…In large volumes, the residues are in the form of straw, stems, bark, wood, and forest residues, and commonly occupy land in the form of disposal by burning, which allows the start of fires and the proliferation of diseases. Residues and by-products are rich in lignocellulosic materials that can be recovered through chemical, physical, and biotechnological treatments (Bigdeloo et al 2021 ; Dietrich et al 2016 ; Scarlat et al 2010 ).…”

“…This is supported by research conducted by Susilowati et al, composting the waste carried out is one of the efforts to reduce waste generation starting from the source and also providing organic fertilizer as nutrients for plants [33]. One of the wastes that can be used as compost is food waste, this is clarified by research conducted by Bigdeloo et al, universities can use food waste with special treatment methods and use it as plant fertilizer, thus the university has carried out waste management to create a cleaner and healthier environment [34].…”

“…A high amount of financial, material, and human resources should be spent to deal with solid wastes. Moreover, packages cause considerable environmental pollution and endangers the human survival environment ( Zhang and Zhao, 2012 ; Bigdeloo et al, 2021 ). After their use, packages are mostly thrown away, buried in landfills, or broken into small pieces and carried by water currents or wind into the environment.…”
