Sustainability Improvement in the Design of Lightweight Roofs: A New Prototype of Hybrid Steel and Wood Purlins

Abstract: A new structural typology of a hybrid purlin, made of type C cold steel and rectangular laminated wood (SWP), is presented in this paper. As a result, improvements on the most commonly used steel purlins are achieved, by substituting some of the steel sections for wooden sections. Although the wooden section is weaker and has a lower elastic modulus than the steel, the overall dimensions of the SWP are no larger than the type C steel purlin. In comparison with the steel ones, SWP purlins achieve a far better p… Show more

“…d p = 0,1 m erreferentziatzat hartuta, errore koadratikoak d p -rekiko erlazio lineala duela erakusten du grafikoak, eremu osoan d p = 0,6 m kasuan izan ezik. Emaitzak diskretuak direnez, aztertutako petralean emaitzak zoriz 0,6-ren multiploetatik gertuago erortzen direla adierazten du beherakadak; kasu gehiago aztertuz gero, erroreak goranzko joera erakutsiko luke[21]. Bataz besteko altzairu-egur luzera 4,75 m izanik, d p = 0,2 m denean kalkuluetan errore erlatiboa % 4,3 da, % 5 baino txikiagoa.…”

“…Initiatives that have been taken and are being taken from the academic and scientific field to mitigate the effects of climate change associated with the activity of the construction sector. For example, García et al (2019) have developed more sustainable construction systems, through the replacement of conventional concrete or steel construction elements with timber elements [145]. There are simple and rapid sustainability assessment models specific to timber structures and buildings, whose objective is to design and project timber buildings in the most sustainable way possible, with the ultimate goal of reducing the impact that the construction sector activity has in the environment [146].…”

“…One example of this is the use of spent coffee grounds to improve thermal insulation [119]. Another example is the use of a prototype hybrid steel and wood purlins for roof construction rather than pure steel [120]. Materials improvements are likely to reduce environmental impacts of residential construction.…”
