Sustainability of health systems research – a conceptional framework based on two projects

Abstract: Background: Projects of health systems research frequently suffer from poor sustainability, i.e., the innovations generated in the project are not adopted as standards. As soon as project funding ends, the interest of researchers declines and the innovations will not make their way in the routine health care system. This failure is partly due to the fact that key partners of the project are very good researchers, but sustainability is not in the core of their interest. Only a few researchers are promoting the … Show more

“…They incorporate governance, strategy and business models alongside measurement and reporting systems. For example, the concept of “dynamic sustainability” emphasises the system’s ability to react to environmental changes to survive under changing conditions (Flessa and Meissner 2019 ). In contrast, the concept of “functional sustainability” addresses a system’s ability to provide services and produce goods (Flessa and Meissner 2019 ).…”

In contrast, the concept of “functional sustainability” addresses a system’s ability to provide services and produce goods (Flessa and Meissner 2019 ). Depending on current circumstances or future needs, a system can maintain or change its structure, leading to the concept of “structural sustainability” (Flessa and Meissner 2019 ).…”

“…It is a specific value with a unique ethical dimension. Health issues, as the most socially sensitive sphere of life, have for years been a significant social, economic (Miszczynska and Miszczynski, 2021) and political problem and have become the source of many international studies (Flessa and Meissner, 2019). Health issues are subject to constant evolution under the influence of the changing environment of the healthcare system and the health determinants of society.…”

“…For this reason, an issue of examination of the applicability of the methods and the methodological processes linking different research areas, such as renewable resources and health, possesses great importance [ 32 , 33 , 34 ]. The creation of the national and international policies is determined by the availability of the quality research reports that have to not only aggregate the current situation, but also reveal the causes of this situation and the possibilities of its solution to quantify the effect of the alternatives, and thus, to help to create stabilisation and the regulatory mechanisms [ 35 , 36 , 37 ]. Without the appropriate analyses, it is not possible to create the relevant policies, but these analyses also require access to the deeper structured data enabling the emergence of the new methodological procedures, as well as the development of the current ones [ 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 ].…”
