Despite the plethora of studies on environmental waqf in the literature, research objectives and results are still inconsistent. Therefore, this study maps the literature on environmental waqf to explore future research directions. Based on data from Scopus from 2001 to March 2022, bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer was used to create this mapping research system. This study visualized a map of co-authorship and co-occurrence of keywords. We present several aspects of the literature on environmental waqf, such as the number of publications per year, document type, journal, author, affiliation, country, subject, and topic. The environmental waqf research review is made up of 120 articles written by 160 authors who are affiliated with 116 institutions across 29 countries. These articles were published in 79 sources. The bibliometric results through the analysis of the keywords identified four research streams: waqf in sustainable development, regional planning, waqf governance in the agricultural sector, and cash waqf for welfare improvement. This study proposes future directions for environmental waqf research, focusing on the role of waqf in achieving the goal of sustainable development for environmental stability.

Waqf in history is an interesting topic to discuss. By knowing the history related to waqf, a Muslim can develop broader perceptions of waqf. This study aims to determine the roles of waqf in the past to be studied and furthermore it is hoped that it can be a recommendation in managing waqf both in terms of managers and regulators. The method used in this study is a systematic literature review. The data used are articles on the Web of Science (WoS). WoS is the oldest, most widely used, and authoritative database of research publications and citations in the world. The topic keywords used in the search were “Waqf in History”, “Waqf Histories”, and “Waqf and Centuries”. The author selected 23 articles that had been screened with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Furthermore, the author divides the 23 articles into 4 major topics, namely: the role of waqf, accounting and waqf supervision, waqf regulations and rules, and waqf risks.

Waqf-based development is in line with the goals of the SDGs. Waqf institutions play an important role in actualizing the SDGs targets including point 16 which is peace, justice and strong institutions. This study aims to design and propose a waqf model for SDGs point 16 peace, justice, and strong institutions in the world by combining the concept of waqf with the activities of related institutions. This research proposes that the best waqf-SDGs model for point 16 is the integrated Waqf & ZIS model. This model is a type of waqf that is social in nature, where waqf is collaborated with ZIS instruments. So that the utilization of this instrument is suitable for social purposes. The implementation of the waqf models that have been proposed with their respective priorities can potentially become an Islamic social fund instrument that participates in supporting the SDGs to ensure that all humans can enjoy a prosperous life and advance economically, socially, and technologically in harmony with nature.
