Abstract: Purpose Sustainability encapsulated economic, environmental and societal parameters. Without exception, these parameters also conforms the efficiency and increasingly importance of sustainable maintenance management for built heritage. However, there is less attention to the appraisal approach for maintenance management of built heritage, twinned with inconsistent and impractical assessment upon their maintenance strategies. “…The adoption of integrated multi-criteria approach in decision-making to enable low carbon options is important for achieving sustainable maintenance management of heritage buildings. However, a systematic appraisal approach to promote good repair impact strategies for heritage buildings is rarely adopted (Kayan, 2019). Although there have been publications and LCA studies on building repair materials by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and the Construction Industry Research and Information Association, UK (CIRIA) (Kayan, 2013), no consensus was reached on final low carbon impact indicators of lime plaster repair materials for heritage buildings.…”

“…Generally classified as cultural heritage property (UNESCO, 1972), heritage buildings include "monuments" of outstanding universal values (The Burra Charter, 1999;Feilden, 2003;The Commissioner of Law Revision, Malaysia, 2005), built within historic environments (Jitilon, 2018). Philosophically, the success of maintenance management of heritage buildings is not only evaluated on the quality of the repair but also on the extent of conformity to building conservation principles (Kayan, 2015(Kayan, , 2019. There is growing international commitment to achieve sustainable repair (Kayan et al, 2017(Kayan et al, , 2018(Kayan et al, , 2019; however, this commitment mainly focuses on new building structures and upgrading works, while very little attention is given to heritage buildings.…”

“…As we have seen, UNESCO inscription has not resulted in effective protection of this construction technique nor the tangible heritagethe constructions themselvesderiving from it. Adequate maintenance programmes have not been developed to ensure their continued upkeep, periodic research and reports on the status of this architectural heritage (Kayan, 2019). It is necessary to analyse the consequences of abandoning this heritage not only for people's cultural traditions but also for the physical layout of the landscape, and how it is endangering the rural environment due to its strategic role in environmental conservation.…”

“…Similarly, in Western Europe, inappropriate repairs by maintenance management teams increased defects leading eventually to fatal consequences for built heritage property (Theodossopoulos, 2018). Kayan (2019) emphasized the relationship between sustainability and the effectiveness of maintenance management of built heritage, within the perspective of maintenance and repair.…”
