Sustainable Composites Using Landfill Bound Materials

Abstract: The demand for new methods of diverting materials from waste streams has grown as sustainability and landfill reduction goals continue to be set. Municipal solid waste combustion and waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities reduce landfill waste accumulation but ash material by-products are commonly sent to landfills. In this work, we evaluate the potential for fly ash to be used as an inert filler in post-consumer recycled polyethylene to maximize landfill diversion of high-volume materials. Using fly ash from solid … Show more

“…EFF is a ratio of the perimeter of a theoretical ellipse with equivalent area and aspect ratio to the actual particle perimeter. 30 Statistical analysis of data sets with multiple data points per sample/category was conducted using JMP Pro 16, SAS Institute, Inc., Cary, NC. Statistically significant differences between samples were identified through one-way ANOVA and post hoc t tests with a 0.05 alpha value.…”

“…All spectra were baseline-corrected with OMINIC TM 8.3 software (Thermo Fisher, Waltham, MA, USA) [22]. The diamond window of the ATR assembly was cleaned with an isopropanol wipe after each measurement to ensure no cross-contamination [23]. A complete randomized design (CRD) was used in this study (Table 1).…”
