Sustainable Delivery Systems: Retention of Model Volatile Oils Trapped on Hybrid Calcium Carbonate Microparticles

Abstract: Transforming liquid active ingredients into solid, powdered materials is important for flavor and fragrance delivery, consumer, food, and beverage product technology, and pharmaceutical formulation. Liquid/powder blending is a sustainable technology to form liquid-loaded powders with a much lower energy input and no heating requirements as compared to heat-driven processes, such as spray-drying. The performance of wetted particles or agglomerates as delivery systems is limited because they typically remain ope… Show more

“…The analysis was conducted via placing 5 mL of liquid droplets on the coated surfaces following static contact angle measurement with the sessile drop method using a theta optical tensiometer attention (Biolin Scientic) at 25 C for 30 s. Nine measurements were conducted on each solid coated surface, and the average values of the readings were tted into Young-Laplace equation. 34 Fowke's model eqn (1) was followed using contact angle results of water and diiodomethane as the polar and non-polar wetting liquids to calculate the surface energy of KL, PS and KL-PS coated lms: 41…”

“…Wettability and surface energy are two imperative aspects that express the compatibility of polymer's surface with surrounding. 34 Jiang and coworkers depicted that treating lignin lm with a nonionic surfactant (i.e., Tween 80) resulted in higher polar surface energy as well as hydrophilicity of lignin lm. 35 Despite its potential use, the surface chemistry of KL-PS was yet to be studied.…”

“…Proteins have also been described such as zein (Bidyarani & Kumar, 2019), milk proteins (Sonu, Mann, Sharma, Kumar, & Singh, 2018) or others (Ansarifar et al, 2019). Synthetic polymers (Robayo, Sierra, & Perez, 2020), solid lipid nanoparticles (Angellotti et al, 2020), liposomes (Umagiliyage, Becerra-Mora, Kohli, well reported such as encapsulation in yeast cells (Normand, Dardelle, Bouquerand, Nicolas, & Johnston, 2005), calcium carbonate microparticles (Elabbadi, Jerri, Ouali, & Erni, 2015), or pseudopeptidic organogelators (Valls et al, 2020).…”

“…Synthetic polymers (Robayo, Sierra, & Perez, 2020), solid lipid nanoparticles (Angellotti et al, 2020), liposomes (Umagiliyage, Becerra‐Mora, Kohli, Fisher, & Choudhary, 2017), metallic nanoparticles (de Barros, Cruz, Mayrink, & Tasic, 2018; Yang, Liu, & Liu, 2020), and composites with cyclodextrin derivatives (Saldanha do Carmo, Pais, Simplício, Mateus, & Duarte, 2017) have also been used to improve the pharmacological properties of the LIM. Others uncommon techniques have been as well reported such as encapsulation in yeast cells (Normand, Dardelle, Bouquerand, Nicolas, & Johnston, 2005), calcium carbonate microparticles (Elabbadi, Jerri, Ouali, & Erni, 2015), or pseudopeptidic organogelators (Valls et al, 2020).…”

“…Different researchers have applied the concept of combining EO with some form of support, be it in the form of encapsulation or compounding into polymers or gels [ 27 , 28 ]. There are few examples of using porous minerals as carriers [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ].…”
