Sustainable dyeing of jute-cotton union fabrics with onion skin (allium CEPA) dye using banana peel (Musa) and guava leaves (Psidium guajava) extract as biomordants

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to evaluate the effects of banana (Musa) peel and guava (Psidium guajava) leaves extract as mordants on jute–cotton union fabrics dyed with onion skin extract as a natural dye. Design/methodology/approach The dye was extracted from the outer skin of onions by boiling in water and later concentrated. The bio-mordants were prepared by maceration using methanol and ethanol. The fabrics were pre-mordanted, simultaneously mordanted and post-mordanted with various concentrations according t… Show more

“…Hence, it qualifies as a fiber for natural dyeing. Also, Cotton yarns are interwoven with jute to improve fabric flexibility and increase the overall hand feel [15]. This type of sustainable blended cloth was dyed using a natural dye made from onion peel (allium CEPA), along with a few bio-mordants like guava leaves and banana peel.…”

“…For example, to attain the optimum washing fastness and color intensity, a jutecotton mix can be dyed using a natural dye prepared from onion skin and mordants created from banana peel and guava leaf extract. [15]. And other natural dyes like Calendula officials and Rubia tinctorum L. were included as colorants for cotton blended fabrics [16].…”

“…Researchers nowadays are trying to develop sustainable products from waste and abundant materials such as composites 15 and sustainable natural materials. 16,17 It is challenging to recycle CBFs since there do not appear to be any simple methods or procedures that guarantee an efficient and cost-effective separation of the butts or a suitable treatment of the entrapped chemicals and appropriate uses of those filter fibers. The majority of researchers attempted to manually break up the cigarette butts and separate the fibers using the crushing method.…”
