Sustainable European Transport System in a 100% Renewable Economy

Abstract: Europe must move towards a 100% renewable transportation system for climate, energy and sustainability reasons. We estimate the capital and energy required for building and operating a renewable transportation system providing similar services as the EU-28 transport system of 2016. It could be based on: biogas or fuel cell vessels; liquid biogas powered aircrafts; electric railways and fuel cell or electric vehicles between major cities; and car sharing, electric buses and electric two- and three-wheelers, for… Show more

“…The aim of transport infrastructure development should be a sustainable transport system that meets the needs of the economy. Some proposals for a sustainable European transport system are published in [39]. The assessment of the effects of transport infrastructure on road freight transport performance also needs to include the provision of transport infrastructure with car parks and appropriate equipment for drivers' rest in accordance with social rules, which are still being tightened up [40].…”

“…Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are among the most efficient electrical generators due to several properties like high energy density, performance and high robustness [3], which leads to multiple applications such as portable power generation, cars, aircrafts and space shuttles [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. In such application, DC-DC high step-up power converters are usually desired not only for boosting the PEMFC low voltage, but also to provide regulated output voltage for end use.…”
