Sustainable fisheries management through reliable restocking and stock enhancement evaluation with environmental DNA

Abstract: The practise of restocking and stock improvement as a means of managing fisheries and aquaculture has been widely used. However, it is difficult to claim that fish stocking is effective due to a number of challenges. One of those is the lack of suitable monitoring and assessment methods, although all assessment approaches have their strengths and weaknesses. If the full benefits of fisheries and their long-term sustainability are to be realised, it is necessary to examine the effectiveness of restocking and st… Show more

“…Re‐planting or re‐stocking is a commonly used method in ecological restoration (Di Sacco et al., 2021 ; Heffernan & Rushton, 2000 ; Osathanunkul & Suwannapoom, 2023 ). Hatchery‐related examples show that rearing conditions affect epigenetic patterns, but also that altered epigenetic marks can persist across life stages and affect germ‐line cells (Koch et al., 2023 ).…”

“…Environmental DNA has become a powerful method for monitoring aquatic biodiversity. Numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in detecting fish species in Thai lotic and lentic water (Blackman et al., 2021 ; Osathanunkul, 2022 ; Osathanunkul & Minamoto, 2021a ; Osathanunkul & Suwannapoom, 2023a , 2023b ; Rodpai et al., 2023 ). The objective of this study was to develop an eDNA‐based survey to monitor the G. cambodgiensis in the Mekong River, which is the largest River Basin in Thailand and a highly profitable river fishery globally.…”

“…Anthropogenic factors (especially fishing operations) and climate change can cause significant changes in the dynamics of fish populations by altering growth, mortality, maturity, and recruitment at the population level [19,20]. Undoubtedly, the most direct and effective method to evaluate the effectiveness of fisheries management is through minorizing and assessing the population dynamics of the fishing targets [21]. Therefore, fishery stock assessments are essential for science-based fisheries management, and their accuracy has always been a focus of fisheries resource research [22].…”
