Facing the new challenges in production processes, companies should adopt lean and green practices in product development. In SMEs, the application of these practices is more complex. This work explores the maturity of lean–green methodologies in the product development process in Brazilian and Japanese SMEs. The methodology used is multicriteria, combining the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and TOPSIS 2-tuple method, applied to four Japanese SMEs and four Brazilian SMEs in the metalworking sector. The criteria for evaluating SMEs are company flexibility, difficulties with NPD, innovation, limited resources, and personnel authority high. The TOPSIS method alternatives refer to 18 lean–green enablers. In the AHP method, the prioritisation of criteria between Japanese and Brazilian specialists presented divergences. In the Japanese context, the incidence of innovation is predominant, while in the Brazilian context, the most important is the limited resources. In the TOPSIS 2-tuple method, the results showed a higher level of maturity in lean–green methodologies in Japanese companies than in Brazilian ones. Lean practices are more evolved compared to sustainable practices in both countries. The study also addressed how open innovation adoption may contribute to innovation and NPD practices. Policymakers need to understand the heterogeneity of innovators within SMEs and how they differently innovate, developing distinct internal and external activities.

To ensure environment friendly products in the international supply chain scenario, an important initiative is reverse supply chain (RSC). The benefits (environmental and financial) from a RSC are influenced by disposal of reusable parts, cost factors and emissions during transportation, collection, recovery facilities, recycling, disassembly and remanufacturing. During designing a network for reverse supply chain, some objectives related to social, economic and ecological concerns are to be considered. This paper suggests two strategies for reducing the costs and emissions in a network of RSC. This research work considers design of RSC for a used-car resale company. First strategy outlines the design of a mobile robot-solar-powered automated guided vehicle (AGV) for reducing logistic cost and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The second strategy proposes a new multi-objective optimization model to reduce the costs and emissions of GHG. Strict carbon caps constraint is used as a guideline for reducing emissions. The proposed strategies are tested for a real-world problem at Maruti True Value network design in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry region of India. Two algorithms namely Elitist Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) and Heterogeneous Multi-Objective Differential Evolution algorithm (HMODE) are proposed. HMODE is a new improved multi-objective optimization algorithm. To select the best optimal solution from the Pareto-optimal front, normalized weighted objective functions (NWOF) method is used. The strength or weakness of a Pareto-optimal front is evaluated by the metrics namely ratio of non-dominated individuals (RNI) and solution spread measure (SSM). Also, Algorithm Effort (AE) and Optimiser Overhead (OO) are utilized to find the computational effort of multi-objective optimization algorithms. Results proved that proposed strategies are worth enough to reduce the GHG emissions and costs. This paper aims to introduce the adaptation of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in the car-loading process of Ro-Ro ships compared with the current loading process. This study analyzed the applicable scenarios for the AGVs’ adaptation in a Ro-Ro port, employing Arena simulation to compare the productivity of the loading processes. The results revealed that the adaptation of the AGVs in the car-loading process of the Ro-Ro ships improves productivity and solves several problems of the current loading process. With 21 or more AGVs, the entire processing time is similar to or less than the current loading process, whereas, after 40 AGVs, it stayed the same. Furthermore, as the number of AGVs increases, the transfer time decreases, but the queue becomes longer. Identifying the effect of the AGV adaptation, this study provides valuable insights for developing the various traffic situations in Ro-Ro port operations.
