Sustainable Packaging

Abstract: The issue of sustainability has attracted considerable attention over the last decade and has been accompanied by the development of stringent packaging material legislation for firms. Drawing on a single case approach, this paper examines the operational challenges faced by manufacturing SMEs as they strive to meet the expectations and requirements of increasingly demanding sustainable packaging regulations. The findings highlight the internal costs and complexities that are faced by manufacturing firms when … Show more

“…For this reason, some of them (in particular, L'Oréal, Guerlain, and Shiseido) are committed to ensuring refillable containers in light of new consumer trends that see the containers as something that is wasteful and no longer necessary. All the companies also seem committed to reducing disposable plastic packaging with those made from recycled materials that can be an alternative to plastic itself, with recyclability targets around 100% as suggested by White et al [22] and in line with a circular approach.…”

“…To verify the environmental impact that a cosmetic product can create in the entire production cycle, it is of paramount importance to consider a series of factors as the emissions of CO 2 , the energy or water consumption, and the use of alternative sources to fossil fuels [21]. The choice of an adequate eco-design linked to reducing the impact of packaging is also a fundamental choice for a company that wants to adopt sustainable, innovative packaging with ethical labels [22]. Environmental sustainability is a key concept that is part of the MNCs business model.…”

“…From the consumers' viewpoint, recycling convenience and the proximity of recycling facilities significantly affect recycling participation (Do Valle et al, 2004). From an industrial perspective, operational cost of packaging waste management is an important concern (Palmer et al, 2021; Satapathy, 2017; White, Sarpong, & Ndrecaj, 2015).…”

“…In research domain 3 (i.e., consumer behaviours towards sustainable packaging), previous studies have examined consumers' attitudes, perceptions and purchasing intentions of sustainable packaging. While consumers value affordability and functionality of sustainable packaging, operational cost constitutes a firm's primary concerns (Palmer et al, 2021; Satapathy, 2017; White, Sarpong, & Ndrecaj, 2015). This shows that different stakeholders have different concerns towards sustainable packaging adoption; however, the extant literature has not been able to address each stakeholder's needs adequately in sustainable packaging management.…”

Collaboration, innovation, and strategic investment are essential for navigating these challenges and accelerating progress towards a more sustainable future (White, et al, 2015;Perera, et al,2023).…”
