Sustainable Renewal Methods of Urban Public Parking Spaces under the Scenario of Shared Autonomous Vehicles (SAV): A Review and a Proposal

Abstract: Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) will be an important force to in reshaping urban morphology. The high operation rate and sharing degree of SAV are considered to result in a great reduction in parking area in future cities. Parking space is now a huge and widely distributed urban stock space type, which is bound to become a major challenge and opportunity for sustainable urban renewal in the digital era. Based on the SAV scenario, this paper reviews the current research on the sustainable renewal of urban pub… Show more

“…The analysis shows that some autonomous vehicles' benefits may begin to be seen in the 2020s or 2030s. Nevertheless, impacts such as reduced traffic and parking spaces [221], increased accessibilities for low-income people [222], increased safety, energy conservation and pollution reduction will be significant from the 2040s to 2050s [223]. One study shows that a considerable fraction of its online panel of 834 US-based participants is not yet ready to use a AV and is disinclined to share a ride in an AV taxi [224].…”

“…There are various forms of parking spaces in cities, including roadside parking, openair parking, parking buildings, and UPSs. The renovation of open-air parking lots and on-street parking spaces is relatively flexible and easy, while UPSs are currently only seen in a few cases [18]. The parking space is an urban system space, and its renewal process is diachronic and dynamic.…”

“…These cases were not concerned with the change in function as parking. However, in the SAV scenario, with the decline in parking demand, a large number of UPSs, especially in urban central areas, must consider the shift in functions [18].…”

“…With the advent of partially or fully self-driving cars, their potential to use existing infrastructure more efficiently has been studied e.g., [4]. Especially, their impact on parking and the transformation of parking space is an active research topic in recent literature [5]. Among other technological advantages, self-driving cars can be leveraged to allow for more densely packed parking lots [6].…”
