Sustainable solvents for β-diketone extraction from wheat straw wax and their molecular self-assembly into nano-structured tubules for hydrophobic coatings

Abstract: 2,2,5,5-Tetramethyloxolane (TMO) and 2,5-diethyl-2,5-dimethyloxolane (DEDMO) were utilized as sustainable solvents for β-diketone extraction and its molecular self-assembly into nano-structured tubules for hydrophobic coatings.

“…24 To date, TMO and DEDMO have been utilized as solvents in natural product extraction, materials science, polymer chemistry and organic synthesis, including Biginelli reactions. 21,22,[25][26][27] Eucalyptol has been investigated as a greener or more sustainable nonperoxide forming ether solvent for several coupling reactions, but such a system still suffers from a number of drawbacks, including moderate yields and high boiling point, thus making product isolation energy intensive. 2,[28][29][30] However, the application of TMO and DEDMO in coupling reactions is limited and further investigation is needed to highlight the full potential of these safer ether solvents.…”
