Sustainable Tourism and Renewable Energy’s Potential: A Local Development Proposal for the La Florida Community, Huaral, Peru

Abstract: Tourism contributes 10% to global gross domestic product (GDP), yet it generates 5% of all anthropogenic CO2, while 50 to 60% of carbon emissions are indirectly related to the sector. High levels of poverty afflict rural areas in developing countries, and sustainable tourism based on renewable energy is an ideal approach to generate local development. Our objectives are thus to gauge sustainable tourism’s influence on local development in the community of La Florida, Huaral, Peru and to evaluate the potential … Show more

“…In this sense, and given the international pressure towards a sustainable energy matrix, energy generation must tend towards being clean [25,26]. Thus, considering the renewable energy potential which Peru has, a viable option is to increase the energy supply through electrical generation that uses non-conventional renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, tidal, and geothermal energy [27][28][29]. It is in this context that wind energy is taking an important role in Peru's energy matrix, being one of the most attractive non-conventional renewable energy alternatives for investors [18,24,30].…”

“…Although an important and promising industrial development in renewable energy has been achieved in Peru through the on-shore wind farms in operation, the development and promotion of the implementation of renewable wind energy on a smaller scale still needs to be implemented, especially in rural areas, where it could generating energy supply for remote communities. This would benefit many communities that still do not have electricity, promoting rural electrification and access to energy by all citizens in a renewable, equitable, and non-polluting manner [25,26,28].…”

“…A promising large-scale advance of clean energy has been achieved in Peru through the under-functioning of solar PV facilities, but the implementation of solar energy on a smaller scale still needs to be promoted in remote communities in rural areas [21,51]. This would promote rural electrification and benefit many persons that still do not have electricity [52][53][54][55][56].…”
