Rural Electrification Corporation limited (RECL) supported an ICRISAT• led consortium to establish two watershed learning sites In Penukonda mandal (4 villages. 3150 ha of cultivated land and home to 8700 people) of Anantapur district in Andhra Prndesh and Wanaparthy mandal (4 villages. 3968 ha of cultivated land and home to 1 1.726 people) In the Mahabubnagar district ofTelangana. The community and farm-based rainwater conservation have created a net storage capacity of about 18.000 m l with total conservation of about 50.000 ml/year of surface runoff water In Anantapur watershed. and 27.000 rn ' storage capacity with conservation of about 54.000 ml/year of surface runoff water in Mahabubnagar watershed. Soil health Improvement with soil testbased addition of macro-and micronutrlents and carbon building. and varietal replacements are promoted with farmers in the watershed. The science-led management has resulted in increasing and sustaining crop and livestock productivity and diversification leading to Increased Incomes to ranners. The RECL-ICRISAT watershed sites have provided a proof of concept and a good learning site for holistic solutions to harness the system productivity and suengthening of livelihood.

Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTI') supported fCRISAT to undertake farmer participatory action research for improving rural live-Iihoods and minimizing land degradation in dryland areas of assured rainfall ecoregion of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The specific objectives were as follows. (I) To enhance productivity and reduce land degradation in target districts. (U) To use these si tes as centres of learning for scaling-out the benefits. The initiative of the Tata-fCRISAT-fCAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) project during 2000 to 2013 demonstrated the power of scienceled development model for improving agricultural productivity and income of the rural poor in India (see Chapter 2 in this volume). The initiative of the Tata-ICRlSAT-lCAR project during 2000-2007 showed the proof of concept and piloted the power of science-led development model for improving agricultural productivity and income of the rural poor in three districts. namely Bundi in Rajasthan. and Guna and Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh. Efficient land water management practice and cropping system for increasing water and crop productivity in semi‐arid tropics

In Indian semi‐arid tropics (SATs), low water and crop productivity in Vertisols and associated soils are mainly due to poor land management and erratic and low rainfall occurrence. This study was conducted from 2014 to 2016 at the ICRISAT in India to test the effect of broad bed furrows (BBF) as land water management against conventional flatbed planting for improving soil water content (SWC) and water and crop productivity of three cropping systems: sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]–chickpea (Cicer arientinum L.) and maize (Zea mays)–groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) as sequential and pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.)] + pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] as intercropping, grown under different nutrients management involving macronutrients (N, P, and K) only and combined application of macro‐ and micronutrients. The results stated that the SWC in BBF was higher over flatbed by 9.35–10.44% in 0‐ to 0.3‐m, 4.56–9.30% in 0.3‐ to 0.6‐m and 3.85–5.26% in 0.6‐ to 1.05‐m soil depths during the cropping season. Moreover, depletion of the soil water through plant uptake was higher in BBF than in flatbed. Among the cropping systems, sorghum–chickpea was the best in bringing highest system equivalent yield and water productivity with the combined application of macro‐ and micronutrients. The BBF minimized water stress at critical crop growth stages leading to increase crop yield and water productivity in SATs. Thus, BBF along with the application of macro‐ and micronutrients could be an adaptation strategy to mitigate erratic rainfall due to climate change in SATs.
