Sustained Inflammation Due to Nuclear Factor-Kappa B Activation in Irradiated Human Arteries

Abstract: In the present study, we found sustained inflammation due to NF-kappaB activation in human radiated arteries. The results are supported by previous in vitro findings suggesting that deoxyribonucleic acid injury, after radiation, activates NF-kappaB. We also suggest that HOXA9 might be involved in the regulation of NF-kappaB activation. The observed sustained inflammatory response can explain cardiovascular disease years after radiation.

“…16 Additionally, activation of a proinflammatory marker, nuclear factor kappaB, may be involved in the ossification of spinal ligaments. 17 Nuclear factor kappaB is involved in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases including cardiovascular disease 18 cancer 19 and in cell death processes in general. 20 Other nondegenerative etiologies which are themselves associated with substantial morbidity including rheumatoid arthritis 21 may also cause CSS.…”

“…Radiation-induced side effects are associated with acute and chronic activation of the endothelium in preclinical models (15) as well as in patients (22). The radiation-induced inflammatory response is common to irradiated tissues and involves endothelial cell activation and secretion of a panel of adhesion molecules, inflammatory mediators, and growth factors (23).…”
