Swab and Sputum SARS-CoV-2 RNA-Negative, CT-Positive, Symptomatic Contacts of COVID-19 Cases: A Hypothesis-Generating Prospective Population-Based Cohort Study of Eight Clusters

Abstract: Background: While some contacts of COVID-19 cases become symptomatic and radiographically abnormal, their SARS-CoV-2 RNA tests remain negative throughout the disease course. This prospective population-based cohort study aimed to explore their characteristics and significances. Methods: From January 22, 2020, when the first COVID-19 case was identified in Hefei, China, until July 3, a total of 14,839 people in Feidong, Hefei, with a population of ~1,081,000 underwent SARS-CoV-2 RNA testing, where 36 cases (0.2%… Show more

“…However, in our series, most cases with b-cellnegative autoantibodies had a COVID-19 negative swab at the time of diabetes onset, and COVID-19 autoantibodies were only tested in a small number of patients. A negative PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 does not exclude viral infection, and indeed computed tomography-positive cases of COVID-19 infection in patients with SARS-CoV-2 RNA-negative tests have been described (19). To better understand this result, more highquality, long-term data need to be collected and analyzed.…”

“…In fact, in a small study conducted in the UK among children with newly diagnosed T1DM, SARS-CoV-2 was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 2/21 and SARS CoV-2 antibodies in 3/16 children tested. COVID-19 infection cannot be ruled out only by a negative PCR test for SARS-CoV-2; indeed, computed tomography-positive cases of COVID-19 infection in patients with SARS-CoV-2 RNA-negative tests have been described [ 112 ]. Regional differences in prevalence and T1DM incidence in migrants conforming to the incidence in the country of destination, and the north-south gradient with higher figures in northern latitudes, have supported the role of environmental influences.…”

“…COVID-19 has spread around the world causing a pandemic ( Huang et al, 2020a ). It can be transmitted rapidly during the asymptomatic period, and is difficult to prevent and control ( Aghamirza Moghim Aliabadi et al, 2020 ; Huang, 2021 ; Huang et al, 2021a , b , c ). Close to the end of February 2022, a new omicron wave of COVID-19 emerged and quickly spread in Shanghai, China ( Huang, 2022 ), and has affected the care of many patients with cancer.…”
