Aims Recent studies showed that patients with various bacterial, viral, and fungal infections might be at increased risk of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the risk of PD in patients with each specific infection varied. This meta‐analysis estimated the association between various infections and PD risk. Methods Literature published from January 1965 to October 2019 in PubMed and EMBASE databases was searched. Data were extracted and pooled using random/fixed effects model. Sensitivity analysis and meta‐regression were also performed to analyze the source of heterogeneity. Publication bias was estimated by the trim and fill. Results Twenty‐three out of 6,609 studies were included. Helicobacter pylori (HP; pooled OR = 1.653, 1.426–1.915, p < .001), hepatitis C virus (HCV; pooled OR = 1.195, 1.012–1.410, p = .035), Malassezia (pooled OR = 1.694, 1.367–2.100, p < .001), and pneumoniae (pooled OR = 1.595, 1.020–2.493, p = .041) infection were associated with increased PD risk. Influenza virus, herpes virus, hepatitis B virus, scarlet fever, mumps virus, chicken pox, pertussis, German measles, and measles were not associated with PD risk. After antiviral treatment against HCV reduced the risk of PD in patients with HCV infection (OR = 0.672, 0.571–0.791, p < .001). Significant heterogeneity exists among the included studies. Conclusion Patients with infection of HP, HCV, Malassezia, pneumoniae might be an increased risk of PD. Antiviral treatment of HCV could reduce the risk of PD.

Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a combination of motor and non-motor dysfunction. Dysphagia is a common symptom in PD, though it is still too frequently underdiagnosed. Consensus is lacking on screening, diagnosis, and prognosis of dysphagia in PD. Objective To systematically review the literature and to define consensus statements on the screening and the diagnosis of dysphagia in PD, as well as on the impact of dysphagia on the prognosis and quality of life (QoL) of PD patients. Methods A multinational group of experts in the field of neurogenic dysphagia and/or PD conducted a systematic revision of the literature published since January 1990 to February 2021 and reported the results according to PRISMA guidelines. The output of the research was then analyzed and discussed in a consensus conference convened in Pavia, Italy, where the consensus statements were drafted. The final version of statements was subsequently achieved by e-mail consensus. Results Eighty-five papers were used to inform the Panel’s statements even though most of them were of Class IV quality. The statements tackled four main areas: (1) screening of dysphagia: timing and tools; (2) diagnosis of dysphagia: clinical and instrumental detection, severity assessment; (3) dysphagia and QoL: impact and assessment; (4) prognostic value of dysphagia; impact on the outcome and role of associated conditions. Conclusions The statements elaborated by the Consensus Panel provide a framework to guide the neurologist in the timely detection and accurate diagnosis of dysphagia in PD.

Dentro del grupo de enfermedades neurodegenerativas, la enfermedad de Parkinson es aquella que genera dificultades en las actividades cotidianas de quien la padece ya que aparecen síntomas motores, fisiológicos y psicológicos en distintos niveles de intensidad que alteran su calidad de vida, tales como vestirse, bañarse, desplazarse, entre otros. Si bien los medicamentos empleados en el tratamiento de la enfermedad de Parkinson logran aliviar la intensidad de los síntomas, estos también pueden causar efectos secundarios y volverse menos eficaces a medida que avanza la enfermedad. Una característica resaltante de dicha enfermedad es la pérdida del ritmo interno de la persona, la cual se evidencia al observar aspectos como la marcha, coordinación de movimientos, e incluso el habla. Frente a dicha situación, se establecieron los objetivos de analizar el concepto general de la enfermedad de Parkinson junto con la característica musical del ritmo y diseñar una propuesta de intervención que combine la actividad musical y motora para beneficiar el ritmo interno y, en consecuencia, mejore el movimiento de marcha de las personas con enfermedad de Parkinson. Para cumplir con dichos objetivos, una extensa revisión de trabajos de investigación, artículos, revistas y fuentes en distintos idiomas ha sido recopilada y analizada.
