Swarm algorithms in dynamic optimization problem of reactive power compensation units control

Abstract: Optimization of a power supply system is one of the main directions in power engineering research. The reactive power compensation reduces active power losses in transmission lines. In general, researches devoted to allocation and control of the compensation units consider this issue as a static optimization problem. However, it is dynamic and stochastic optimization problem that requires a real-time solution. To solve the dynamic optimization NP-hard problem, it is advisable to use Swarm Intelligence. This re… Show more

“…The PSO was proposed by Eberhart and Kennedy in 1995 as one of the swarm population-based algorithms [31]. It mimics the social behaviour of flocking of birds [32] or schooling of fishes [2] and the dynamic movement of social insects. It is based on natural selection and searching methods applied by the aforementioned creatures [33].…”

“…where Uns2 and Ups1 are the negative and positive voltage sequence components, respectively. The current unbalance factor kI2 can be determined similarly to equation (4) for the evaluation of the influence of the load unbalance on the power quality level. The indicator of the degree of correction of voltage dips and deviations ΔU is determined according to the following:…”

“…It is undeniable that ensuring power quality improvement and electromagnetic compatibility is critical in centralized power supply systems, distributed generation systems, and combined power supply systems [1][2][3][4]. The main negative influences of the poor power quality level on electrical equipment and power supply systems are well-known and have been studied in detail [5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…Swarm Intelligence (SI) algorithms are one of the most effective ways to solve complex optimization problems [18,19] including optimization of power systems [20][21][22]. We mean non-linear, non-differentiable, high-dimensional problems with complex topology of the solution search space, stochastic and dynamic properties.…”

“…In this research, a separate study of the influence of the heuristic coefficients was not carried out. We used several sets of heuristic coefficient values that showed high efficiency in our previous studies about [20]. The FFO algorithm requires comparing each particle to each other, so the number of operations quadratically depends on the number of particles.…”
