Sweden: Submerged Landscapes of the Early Mesolithic

Abstract: In the Swedish waters of the southwestern Baltic Sea, large areas (3500 km 2) of inundated land are present. Due to the complex patterns of past sea-level oscillations, combined with cold and brackish water, conditions for preserved Early Mesolithic sites (11,500-8000 cal BP) are good. So far, only 44 archaeological sites, or clusters of sites, have been found. Recent geoarchaeological and diving surveys have resulted in new information about now-submerged terrestrial remains of forests, river valleys, lakes a… Show more

“…Burials are also potentially present within the submerged area and are well attested from submerged contexts internationally, including Denmark (Bailey et al 2020), Norway (Glørstad et al 2020;Nymoen and Skar 2011), Sweden (Nilsson et al 2020), Italy (Antonioli et al 1996), Israel (Hershkovitz and Galili 1990) and the USA (Sturt et al 2018). In the Northern Territory, burial practices include cremation, excarnation, tree burial, log coffins, and primary and secondary burials in rockshelters, sand dunes and middens (Allen and Barton 1989;Lowe et al 2014;Meehan 1971;Schrire 1982).…”

“…Therefore, it is important to understand where and when certain landscapes and areas were used and occupied and what role they played in the perception and lifeways of prehistoric hunter-gatherers. With several well-investigated areas, the picture of early Mesolithic settlement strategies is becoming increasingly rich in detail (e.g., [55][56][57][58][59][60]). Besides pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating, geophysical investigation together with coring allow a detailed landscape investigation, which increases our understanding of the depositional processes that took place during peat formation.…”

“…Under legal regulation of the Coastal Zone Management Act and UCH, competent authority should identify stakeholders and arrange a public hearing to prohibit any harmful action and proposes plans of heritage site protection. The underwater investigation leads to tensions and con icts between scienti c archaeological research and regulations resources available to protect and manage UCH (Nilsson, Hansson, & Sjöström, 2020). Marine spatial planning (MSP) is an integral part of comprehensive integration with innovative transition and often focuses on achieving speci c objectives, related to important strategic priorities (J.S.…”

“…More connection with more values deeply researches underwater heritage and builds incubation center in marine heritage. The inspiration for investigations, collaborations, directions of research improves UCH management through scienti c, governmental, industrial cooperation, and new participants of underwater archaeology(Nilsson et al, 2020). The fourth group "International Politics, Political, and Law" is the same issue "International Politics, Political and Law".…”
