Swedish Reception of Unaccompanied Refugee Children—Promoting Integration?

Abstract: In this article we describe and analyse the Swedish reception of unaccompanied refugee children and efforts to promote their integration into Swedish society. We identify the actors involved in the reception and promotion of the children's integration and investigate their efforts through the lens of social ecological systems theory. We show that reception is fraught with challenges that concern lack of interconnections between actors, lack of an articulated political vision of integration and absence of syste… Show more

“…The international research on URM covers a variety of different areas such as physical health and screening for different types of diseases (Marquardt et al, 2016;Williams et al, 2016), age estimation (Thevissen et al, 2012) and the structure of care and reception processes (Derluyn and Broekaert, 2008;Wimelius et al, 2017). Further, there is research that explores the everyday life of URM and research that emphasises the need to listen to the minors own voices in order to better understand their experiences in the resettlement countries (Lundberg and Dahlquist, 2012;Malmsten, 2014;Wernesjö, 2014;Herz and Lalander, 2017).…”

“…Future research can very well examine this possible strategy to increase social support. Further, building on the studies by Riedel et al (2011) and Wimelius et al (2017), we suggest future research to examine how young immigrants' health is affected by taking part in health promotion efforts aiming at integration and acculturation.…”

“…According to van Manen (1997), phenomenological research is attuned toward caring and thoughtfulness which can be a way to meet the challenges of health promotion efforts aimed at young immigrants in Sweden. The health of young immigrants is considered deficient (Wimelius et al, 2017) and giving voice to this group of young people can be a start. The language may have had a limiting effect when young immigrants with rudimentary Swedish language skills were Figure 5 "Worried, sad and alone" (participant 12) asked to write in Swedish.…”

“…Several studies on refugee children and UMs have dealt with the notion of resilience versus vulnerability (Derluyn, Broekaert & Schuyten 2008;Eide & Hjern 2013;Luster et al 2010;Nardone & Correa-Velez 2015;Wallin & Ahlström 2005). It has been shown that the introductory stage, namely, how these children are received and how the asylum process takes place, has a very important impact on the well-being of these children (Çelikaksoy & Wadensjö 2017a;Söderqvist, Sjöblom & Bulow 2014;Wimelius, Joakim & Mehdi 2016). Some of the important influences identified in the Nordic countries are related to close contacts with persons from the society of the destination country and the time of waiting (Honkasalo 2017).…”
