Coal swelling in the presence of water as well as CO 2 is a well-known phenomenon, and these may affect the permeability of coal. Quantifying swelling effects is becoming an important issue to verify the suitability of particular coal seams for CO 2 -enhanced coal bed methane recovery projects. In this report, coal swelling experiments using a visualization method in the CO 2 supercritical conditions were conducted on crushed coal samples. The measurement apparatus was designed specifically for the present swelling experiment using a visualization method. Crushed coal samples were used instead of block coal samples to shorten equilibrium time and to solve the problem of limited availability of core coal samples. Dry and wet coal samples were used in the experiments because there is relatively limited information about how the swelling of coal by CO 2 is affected by water saturation. Moreover, some coal seams are saturated with water in initial reservoir conditions. The maximum volumetric swelling was around 3% at 10 MPa for dry samples and almost half that at the same pressure for wet samples. The wet samples showed lower volumetric swelling than dry ones because the wet coal samples were already swollen by water. Experimental results obtained for swelling were comparable with other reports. Our visualization method using crushed samples has advantages in terms of sample preparation and experimental execution compared with the other methods used to measure coal swelling using block samples.

To elucidate the tempo‐spatial effect and the corresponding mechanism of hydraulic fracturing on gas desorption, the experiments of the hydraulic fracturing in the field and the gas adsorption‐desorption in the laboratory were carried out, respectively. The difference of the effects on the total amount of gas desorption, desorption proportion, moisture content, and in situ gas drainage concentration of the original and fracturing coal samples were studied. The results show that coal moisture increase in the 29 m area of hydraulic fracturing, the greater moisture content and the smaller amount of gas desorption, and the 9 m coal samples moisture content is 2.77 times greater than that of the original coal samples, and whose total amount of gas desorption for 29.8% of the original coal samples. In addition, the closer to the fracturing borehole, the smaller the desorption velocity, which is the fastest in the initial 5 minutes. The desorption velocity of the original coal samples is 5.6 times greater than that of the 9 m coal samples. The desorption proportion of the coal samples is high in early stages, η30 min is 64% (ηi is the proportion of the instantaneous total of gas desorption to the total gas desorption, %), and for η6 h‐12 h is 10%. The tempo‐spatial effects of desorption characteristics can be expressed as the time‐delay effect and a space‐reduction effect. Furthermore, the upper limit of deformation of the coal seam is 3.3‰ and the ability of gas desorption in coal seam significantly decreases. The time of gas drainage concentration exhibits more than 30% increases from the 10 days in the nonfracturing area to 90 days in the fracturing area. Finally, hydraulic fracturing crushes coal, replaces absorption gas, increases the moisture content of coal, reduces various stresses, makes coal shrink, and ultimately achieves the effects of pressure relief and permeability improvement.

CO2 sequestration in deep, unmineable coal seams has been proposed as a method for offsetting increasing anthropogenic CO2 emissions, while increasing natural gas production. Through laboratory experiments on gaseous/supercritical CO2 adsorption using a manometric procedure, we investigated anomalies in supercritical CO2 adsorption and determined CO2 density‐temperature effects on adsorption capacity, which are closely related to the CO2 storage potential in deep coal reservoirs. Results indicate that the revised Dubinin‐Radushkevich (D‐R) model can fit supercritical CO2 adsorption data well, and there is a significant difference between excess and absolute adsorption capacity as CO2 density increases. In the supercritical isochore, a rapid change in CO2 density results in a transition from Langmuir‐like monolayer adsorption to multilayer adsorption, and there is an unsaturated multilayer system during this transition. Above the temperature at the cross point, the increasing of density decreases, and a negative dependence on temperature causes a gradual decrease in adsorption capacity. Coal reservoirs near the boundary between the supercritical isochore stage and fully supercritical CO2 stage should be the prime target for geological storage of CO2. In order to better understand supercritical CO2 adsorption behavior and identify target coal seams, further supercritical CO2 adsorption experiments are needed in the southern Qinshui Basin.
