Swine enteric coronavirus disease: A review of 4 years with porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus and porcine deltacoronavirus in the United States and Canada

Abstract: Swine enteric coronaviruses, including porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) and porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), have emerged and spread throughout the North American swine industry over the last four years. These diseases cause significant losses within the pork industry and within the first year after PEDV introduction, approximately 10% of the US herd died due to the disease. Similar to other enteric coronaviruses, such as transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), these emerging swine enteric coronavi… Show more

“…Due to the 100% mortality rates of piglets in the icPC22 A-infected pigs (Hou et al, 2017) and coinfection groups, we currently cannot determine whether the pathogenicity of PEDV icPC22 A is enhanced during the coinfection. That should be investigated in older pigs (weaned pigs, sows and boars) which are more resistant to PEDV infection and diseases (Niederwerder and Hesse, 2018). In addition, the emergence of S1 NTD-del PEDV variants may complicate PEDV disease pattern on farms, which needs to be further investigated.…”

“…The Vietnam/Laos/Thailand lineage has been detected in Southeast Asia (Janetanakit et al, 2016;Lorsirigool et al, 2017Lorsirigool et al, , 2016Saeng-Chuto et al, 2017). The USA/Japan/South Korea lineage has a worldwide distribution (Jang et al, 2017;Nelson et al, 2019;Niederwerder and Hesse, 2018;Perez-Rivera et al, 2019;Suzuki et al, 2018). The China lineage has been the predominant lineage in China since 2014 Zhang et al, 2019a).…”

“…In October 2010, a highly pathogenic variant PEDV strain was identified in China; this variant caused the worst recorded outbreak and soon swept throughout almost the entire country (Li et al, 2012). Subsequently, this PEDV variant caused a pandemic in the United States (US) starting in the spring of 2013 and then spread to Canada and Mexico (Niederwerder and Hesse, 2018). Severe PED outbreaks have recurred almost simultaneously in many Asian countries, such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea and Japan, and US prototype-like GII PEDV strains have been found to be accountable for these outbreaks (Cheun-Arom et al, 2016;Chung et al, 2016;Lee et al, 2017;Lin et al, 2014;Paraguison-Alili and Domingo, 2016;Van Diep et al, 2015).…”
