Metastructures are widely used in photonic devices, energy conversion and biomedical applications. However, to fabricate multiple patterns continuously in single etching protocol with highly tunable photonic properties is challenging. Here we proposed a simple and robust dynamic nanosphere lithography by inserting a spacer between the nanosphere assembly and the wafer. The nanosphere diameter decrease and uneven penetration of the spacer during etching leads to a dynamic masking process. Coupled anisotropic physical ion sputtering and ricocheting with isotropic chemical radical etching achieved highly tunable structures with various 3D patterns continuously forming through a single etching process. Specifically, the nanosphere diameters define the periodicity, the etched spacer forms the upper parts, and the wafer forms the lower parts. Each part of the structure is highly tunable through changing nanosphere diameter, spacer thickness and etch conditions. Using this protocol, we realized numerous structures of varying sizes including nano mushrooms, nanocones, nano pencils, and nanoneedles with diverse shapes as proof of concepts. The broadband antireflection ability of the nanostructures and their use in SERS were also demonstrated for practical application. Our method substantially simplified the fabrication procedure of various metastructures, paving the way for its application in multiple disciplines especially in photonic devices.This article is protected by copyright. Optical tweezers revolutionized the manipulation of nanoscale objects. Typically, tunable manipulations of optical tweezers rely on adjusting either the trapping laser beams or the optical environment surrounding the nanoparticles. Here, tunable and switchable trapping using nanoparticles made of a phase‐change material (vanadium dioxide or VO2) are achieved. By varying the intensity of the trapping beam, transitions of the VO2 between monoclinic and rutile phases are induced. Depending on the nanoparticles' sizes, they exhibit one of three behaviors: small nanoparticles (in the settings, radius wavelength ) remain always attracted by the laser beam in both material phases, large nanoparticles () remain always repelled. However, within the size range of , the phase transition of the VO2 switches optical forces between attractive and repulsive, thereby pulling/pushing them toward/away from the beam center. The effect is reversible, allowing the same particle to be attracted and repelled repeatedly. The phenomenon is governed by optical Mie modes of the nanoparticles and their alterations during the phase transition of the VO2. This work provides an alternative solution for dynamic optical tweezers and paves a way to new possibilities, including optical sorting, light‐driven optomechanics and single‐molecule biophysics.

Robust high-order petal-mode laser with tunable topological charge pumped by an axicon-based annular beam

In this work, we demonstrate a watt-level laser producing high-order, petal-shaped output modes with tunable topological charge, by using an axicon-based divergent annular pump beam. The topological charge of the output beam could be varied in the range of 34–72 by adjusting the position of the Nd:YVO4 crystal relative to the focal plane of the pump beam. The highest order petal-mode beam generated from the system had a topological charge of 72 and a power of 1.3 W. The highest output power up to 2.1 W with a topological charge of 34 was achieved at an absorbed pump power of 5.8 W. The generated output modes were observed to be robust under power scaling and on propagation, with the same spatial profiles being maintained in the near- and far-fields. We anticipate that this system design may find use as a laser source in applications such as 3D optical trapping, fabrication of optical vortex arrays, optical communications, and high-sensitivity spatial measurement.
