Switchable Quad-Band Antennas for Cognitive Radio Base Station Applications

Abstract: Abstract-A novel antenna configuration for quad-band operation is presented. The quad-band antenna has a directional radiation pattern in four frequency bands, i.e., B1 (800-900 MHz), B2 (1.7-2.5 GHz), B3 (3.3-3.6 GHz), and B4 (5.1-5.9 GHz), covering all spectrums for existing wireless applications, such as GSM, PCS, WCDMA, WiFi, and WiMax. The operating frequency of the quad-band antenna can be adjusted by the use of a MEMS switch, making it suitable for cognitive radio applications. First a switchable quad-b… Show more

“…Simulated and measured S 11 is better than -10 dB for 1-3 GHz and 5-7 GHz. Figure 13 shows that E field redistributes under UWB antenna and stub S 6 . The observed value of gain is 2.4 dB at 5 GHz as shown in Fig.…”

“…Such antenna has a spectrum-sensing antenna for detecting the spectrum condition and reconfigurable antenna for communicating purpose [1], [2]. Many antenna designs have been already reported in the literatures, which are compatible with CR [3][4][5][6]. Further to decrease the system size, these two antennas must be optimally design on a single substrate.…”

“…In this paper we are proposing a novel compact frequencyreconfigurable monopole antenna with various switchable states. Most of frequency-reconfigurable antennas are antennas only capable of switching between different narrowband modes [16]- [17]. In [16], a switchable quad-band antenna by using a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) switch has been proposed.…”

By controlling the states of switches, the patch antenna in [17] can operate in four different frequencies.…”
